Vatican City - As Pope Leo XIV announced at the end of the first Extraordinary Consistory last January, a new gathering now awaits the cardinals from across the world in the Vatican, close to the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul.

This morning, the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Giovanni Battista Re, wrote to all the cardinals to communicate the practical details of the event: proceedings will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday 26 June and will continue throughout Saturday 27 June. On Sunday 28 June, there will be a Eucharistic Concelebration presided over by the Holy Father, while on Monday 29 June, the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, a further Eucharistic Celebration is scheduled. The forthcoming Consistory forms part of the method of governance that Leo XIV intends to consolidate: periodically gathering the cardinals from across the world in order to address together the fundamental issues in the life of the Church. It is an occasion intended to become an established practice, held annually and expected to last three or four days. The Pope had explained that he wanted to make the Consistories a stable instrument of his pontificate, both to listen to the cardinals and to encourage mutual acquaintance among prelates coming from every part of the world.
