Cookies allow us to run the site and, only with your consent, to measure traffic and show content and adverts from third parties. Below you'll find which tools we use, what they're for and how to manage your preferences.
Session, login, language and security cookies: necessary and set without consent.
Google Analytics and Google Ads are only activated if you consent.
You can change or withdraw your consent at any time.
What are cookies and local storage
Cookies are small text files that the site sends to your browser, where they are stored and, where applicable, sent back to the server on later visits.
Local storage (such as localStorage and sessionStorage) instead allows the browser to keep certain information directly on your device. Unlike cookies, this data is not automatically transmitted to the server with every request: some values may be read by the site and used only for technical functions you have requested, such as staying signed in to your account area or storing local preferences.
Depending on their purpose, cookies fall into the following categories:
- strictly necessary cookies, required for the site to work or to provide a service you have requested;
- non-essential cookies — analytics, profiling, advertising or tracking cookies — which require your consent.
Legal framework
The use of cookies and similar technologies is governed by Directive 2002/58/EC (the ePrivacy Directive), as implemented under Estonian electronic communications law, and by Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (the GDPR), where the use of such tools involves the processing of personal data.
Strictly necessary cookies required for a service you have requested do not need consent. Analytics and advertising cookies are only set with your prior consent; if you make no choice, the default setting is refusal.
Strictly necessary cookies
These cookies are essential for the site to work and cannot be switched off through the banner. They do not require your consent.
| Name | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| snp_lang_pref | Stores your preferred language so content is shown in the right language. | Persistent, until changed or deleted |
| snp_user_token | Authentication token for registered users, set at login and needed to keep you signed in to your account area. | Session, or until logout/expiry |
| laravel_session | Server-side session cookie, needed for the account area and user sessions to work. | 120 minutes |
| XSRF-TOKEN | Security cookie that protects forms and requests on the site from CSRF (Cross-Site Request Forgery) attacks. | Session, or as technically required |
Blocking these cookies through your browser settings may stop the site, the account area, login and security features from working properly.
Local storage
Besides cookies, the site uses local storage technologies in the browser. Except where noted, this data stays on your device and is not automatically sent to the data controller's servers.
| Name | Purpose | Storage and duration |
|---|---|---|
| snp_cookie_consent | Records the choice you made on the cookie banner (accepting or rejecting non-essential cookies) so your preferences are applied and the banner isn't shown again. | localStorage, until deleted or your choice is updated |
| snp_user_token | Technical, client-side copy of the authentication token, needed for certain account-area features. | localStorage, until logout/expiry or deletion |
| snp_reading_history | History of articles read and reading progress. This data stays only on your device and is not sent to the data controller's servers. | localStorage, until you delete it |
You can delete data stored in localStorage or sessionStorage at any time through your browser settings.
Analytics cookies — Google Analytics
The site uses Google Analytics, an analytics service provided by Google, to measure traffic and site usage in aggregate form and to improve our content. These cookies are only set with your prior consent and are not activated without it.
Google Analytics may set cookies and identifiers to recognise repeat visits and build up browsing statistics. Where available, the data controller favours settings that minimise data collection (for example, anonymising the IP address).
Advertising cookies — Google Ads
The site uses Google Ads for advertising. These cookies are used to display adverts, measure how they perform and, where applicable, personalise them based on your interests. They are profiling/marketing cookies and are only set with your prior consent.
You can also manage your Google advertising preferences through your Google Account settings and the opt-out tools Google provides.

Cookie banner and consent management
On your first visit, the site shows a banner letting you accept or reject non-essential cookies (analytics and advertising), with buttons of equal prominence. Strictly necessary cookies remain active at all times and don't require consent.
Your choice is recorded in snp_cookie_consent and applied on later visits. You can change or withdraw your consent at any time, as easily as you gave it; withdrawing consent doesn't affect the lawfulness of processing based on consent given before the withdrawal.
If you make no choice, no analytics or advertising cookies are set: the default option is refusal.
Managing cookies via your browser
Regardless of the site's banner, you can view, block and delete cookies, and clear local storage, through your browser settings. Browser settings, however, don't allow granular, category-by-category control of consent.
Disabling strictly necessary cookies may mean some site features stop working.
International transfers
Some third-party providers may process data outside the European Economic Area, in particular in the United States (e.g. Google). Mollie B.V. is based in the European Union and processes data mainly within the EEA; any transfers to third countries by its sub-processors are carried out with the safeguards required by the GDPR. Such transfers rely — in particular — on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, where the provider adheres to it, or on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. Further details are in each provider's own notices and in the site's Privacy Policy.
Data controller and contact details
For full information on the processing of personal data, the legal bases relied on, data subject rights and transfers to third countries, please see the site's Privacy Policy.
Changes to this policy
The data controller may update this policy to reflect changes to the cookies in use, to local storage technologies, to external services or to the applicable legal framework. The current version is always published on this page, with the date it was last updated.
