Cookies let us keep the site running and, only with your consent, measure traffic and show content and advertisements from third parties. Here's what tools we use, what they're for, and how to manage your preferences.
Session, login, language and security: necessary, and set without consent.
Google Analytics and Google Ads are only activated if you consent.
You can change or withdraw your consent at any time.
What cookies and local storage are
Cookies are small text files that the site sends to a user's browser, where they are stored and, where applicable, sent back to the server on later visits.
Local storage (such as localStorage and sessionStorage), by contrast, allows the browser to keep certain information directly on the device. Unlike cookies, this data is not automatically transmitted to the server with every request: some values may be read by the application and used only for technical functions the user has requested, such as accessing the members' area or remembering local preferences.
Depending on their function, cookies fall into:
- technical cookies, necessary for the site to work or to provide a service the user has requested;
- non-essential cookies — statistical/analytics, profiling, advertising or tracking — for which consent is required.
Regulatory framework
The use of cookies and similar technologies is governed by Directive 2002/58/EC (ePrivacy), as implemented under Estonian electronic communications law, and by Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR), where the use of these tools involves the processing of personal data.
Technical cookies that are strictly necessary for a service the user has requested are exempt from consent. Statistics and advertising cookies are only set with prior consent; where no choice has been made, the default is refusal.
Necessary technical cookies
These cookies are essential for the site to work and cannot be switched off via the banner. They do not require the user's consent.
| Name | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| snp_lang_pref | Stores the user's preferred language so content is shown in the right language. | Persistent, until changed or deleted |
| snp_user_token | Authentication token for a registered user, set on login and needed to keep access to the user area. | Session, or until logout/expiry |
| laravel_session | Server-side session cookie, needed for the members' area and user sessions to work. | 120 minutes |
| XSRF-TOKEN | Security cookie that protects the site's forms and requests against CSRF (Cross-Site Request Forgery) attacks. | Session, or the technical duration set for it |
Blocking these cookies via your browser settings may stop the site, the members' area, login and security features from working properly.
Local storage
Alongside cookies, the site uses local storage technologies in the browser. Unless stated otherwise, this data stays on the user's device and is not automatically transmitted to the Controller's servers.
| Name | Purpose | Storage and duration |
|---|---|---|
| snp_cookie_consent | Records the choice made on the cookie banner (accepting or refusing non-essential cookies) so those preferences are applied and the banner isn't shown again. | localStorage, until the choice is deleted or updated |
| snp_user_token | A technical copy of the authentication token accessible client-side, needed for certain functions in the user area. | localStorage, until logout/expiry or deletion |
| snp_reading_history | History of articles read and reading progress. This data stays only on the device and is not transmitted to the Controller's servers. | localStorage, until deleted by the user |
Users can delete data stored in localStorage or sessionStorage at any time via their browser settings.
Statistics cookies — Google Analytics
The site uses Google Analytics, an analytics service provided by Google, to measure traffic and site usage in aggregate form and improve its content. These cookies are only set with prior consent and are not activated without it.
Google Analytics may set cookies and identifiers to recognise repeat visits and build browsing statistics. Where available, the Controller favours settings that minimise data collected (for example, IP address anonymisation).
Advertising cookies — Google Ads
The site uses Google Ads for advertising. These cookies are used to serve advertisements, measure their performance and, where applicable, personalise them based on interests. They are profiling/marketing cookies and are only set with prior consent.
You can also manage your Google advertising preferences from your Google account settings and via the opt-out tools Google provides.

Cookie banner and consent management
On a first visit, the site shows a banner allowing you to accept or refuse non-essential cookies (statistics and advertising), with buttons given equal prominence. Technical cookies remain active at all times and do not require consent.
Your choice is recorded in snp_cookie_consent and applied on later visits. You can change or withdraw your consent at any time, just as easily as you gave it; withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out on the basis of consent before its withdrawal.
If you make no choice, no statistics or advertising cookie is set: the default option is refusal.
Managing cookies via your browser
Regardless of the site's banner, you can view, block and delete cookies and clear local storage through your browser's settings. Browser settings, however, do not allow for granular, per-category control of consent.
Disabling technical cookies may mean some of the site's features are unavailable.
Transfers to third countries
Some third-party providers may process data outside the European Economic Area as well, in particular in the United States (e.g. Google). Mollie B.V. is based in the European Union and processes data mainly within the EEA; any transfers to third countries by its sub-processors take place under the safeguards required by the GDPR. Such transfers rely, in particular, on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, where the provider adheres to it, or on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. Further details are available in each provider's own notices and in the site's Privacy Policy.
Controller and contact details
For full details on the processing of personal data, legal bases, data subject rights and transfers to third countries, please see the site's Privacy Policy.
Changes to this notice
The Controller may update this notice where the cookies used, local storage technologies, external services, or the applicable regulatory framework change. The current version is always published on this page, together with the date it was last updated.
