Tallinn – The United Kingdom has completed the changeover at the head of its diplomatic mission in Estonia. Her Excellency Jo Lomas, appointed in January as His Majesty’s new Ambassador to Tallinn, presented her credentials to President Alar Karis on 11 August, formally completing her accreditation as head of mission in Estonia.

Her appointment was announced by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office at the beginning of the year, when London confirmed that Lomas would succeed Ross Allen, who was moving on to another role within the British diplomatic service. Lomas formally took up her post on 3 August, beginning a short transition that concluded eight days later with the credentials ceremony at the presidential residence.

Lomas has spent almost her entire career at the Foreign Office, which she joined in 1993. Before her appointment to Estonia, she served as Deputy Director for Europe and represented the United Kingdom as High Commissioner to Rwanda and Namibia. Earlier in her career, she also served as Deputy Head of Mission in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The ceremony at Kadriorg followed the usual protocol observed by the Estonian presidency for newly arrived heads of mission, with a guard of honour assembled for the occasion. Lomas’s meeting with Karis comes at a time when London continues to play a leading role in our country’s security. The United Kingdom leads the NATO battlegroup based at Tapa and heads the Joint Expeditionary Force, the maritime-led initiative bringing together ten countries from the Baltic and Nordic region.
