‘I want Aline’s head’: Mauro Giuseppe Lepori and the abuse of conscience

In the report submitted to the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life, the Abbot General accused the abbess of manipulation without providing any evidence and called for her permanent exclusion from positions of governance within the Order: a pattern which, according to several internal accounts, has recurred in a number of communities where Lepori has exercised authority.

Silere non possum has obtained the document submitted by Mauro Giuseppe Lepori, Abbot General of the Cistercian Order, to the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life concerning the monastery of San Giacomo di Veglia. In the report, Lepori attributes to the community’s abbess an extraordinary ability to manipulate and seduce others, both inside and outside the monastery, yet provides no evidence to substantiate the allegation. His sole argument is that several people agreed with her. In the Abbot General’s view, this in itself appears to prove that they too had been manipulated. Lepori goes so far as to claim that even the visitator appointed by the Dicastery to examine the situation at the monastery had fallen under the abbess’s influence.
